Format & scoring
Mid-Winter Madness is a pairs tournament. Two coaches will play together as a team against others pairs of coaches. The first round is random draw for each team and the individuals within it and then teams / coaches are paired by Swiss.
If anyone doesn’t have a partner to pair with then they can sign up individually and they will be matched with someone on the day.
Scoring is as follows –
Teams
• Win – 2 points
• Draw – 1 point
• Loss – 0 points
Individuals
• Win – 40 points
• Draw – 20 points
• Loss – 0 points
• Touchdowns – 1 point per touchdown up to a maximum of 3
• Casualties – 1 point per casualty up to a maximum of 3
• Shut out – 1 point for not conceding any touchdowns
Tie breakers – if at the end any results are tied on points, then tie breakers will be as follows.
These apply for teams and individuals.
• Head to head results (only used after round 4)
• Lowest tiered pairings (only used after round 4)
• Strength of schedule (only used after round 4)
• Number of total wins (teams only)
• Combined touchdown and casualty difference
Team Building
Coaches have 1,200,000 gold crowns with which to build a team. As a minimum they must buy 11 players but after that (almost) anything goes. As well as players, gold may be spent on coaches, cheerleaders, rerolls, dedicated fans, apothecaries and inducements.
There are a lot of options open for Mid-Winter Madness coaches . . . . they are free to build a conservative team if they wish. They may however, also go a little crazy if that takes their fancy!
Coaches may take any of the NAF approved teams including Slann & Khorne. No pair may use the same team twice e.g. 2 paired coaches cannot both use Orcs.
Inducements
As part of the Madness, all coaches must take at least one inducement from the list below. Coaches must follow the restrictions in place for inducements e.g. Snotlings are not allowed to hire a Halfling Hot Pot.
Please see BB2020 rules book and Deathzone for a breakdown of costs.
• 0-1 Biased Referees
• 0-2 Bloodweiser Kegs
• 0-3 Bottles of Heady Brew
• 0-3 Bribes
• 0-3 Cavorting Nurglings
• 0-1 Dwarfen Runesmith
• 0-1 Halfling Hotpot
• 0-1 Halflings Master Chef
• 0-2 Infamous coaching staff (all of those in BB2020 rules book, Deathzone and from Spike 11 onwards)
• 0-1 Master of Ballistics
• 0-1 Medicinal Unguent
• 0-1 Mortuary Assistant
• 0-1 Plague Doctor
• 0-1 Riotous Rookies
• 0-5 Special Play Cards *
• 0-1 Team Mascott
• 0-1 Waaagh! Drummer
• 0-2 Wandering Apothecaries
• 0-1 Weather Mage
• 0-1 Wizard
* Special play cards must be drawn each round
Star Players and Mercenaries
No star players are allowed for the Mid-Winter Madness . . . . sorry Griff fans. However, coaches may, if they wish, hire 0-2 regular mercenaries using the rules in Deathzone.
If making your own mercenaries, there are a couple of guidelines –
• The first mercenary can cost no more than 160,000 gold crowns and the second no more than 100,000 gold crowns.
• Mighty Blow +2 and Dirty Player +2 are not allowed
• If two mercenaries are hired, they must be different types i.e. you cannot hire 2 Brutal Blockers on one team
• If you hire a mercenary, please ask the TO for a mercenary star player card to complete in advance.
Skills
The Madness is all a bit random and not taking things too seriously. There is a skills pack dependent upon tier, but all skills are random. The Madness will use a 3 tier system, following the tiers outlined in the BB2020 rules books and Spike Magazines. For the purposes of Slann teams, they are considered to be tier 2.
Skills are rolled in front of your opponent before each game. Tier 1 teams will gain 4 skills in total, tier 2 teams 6 skills and tier 3 teams 8 skills. All random skills are primary skills only and not secondary skills. If a player rolls a skill they already have, they must roll both of the 2d6 again.
Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3
Round 1 1 2 2
Round 2 1 2 2
Round 3 1 1 2
Round 4 1 1 2
Tier 2 teams may stack 2 skills on one player of their choice.
Tier 3 teams may stack 2 skills on 2 players of their choice.
Weather Table
The Mid-Winter Madness tournament will use the Winter Weather table, taken from Deathzone.
Glittering prizes
There will be trophies and prizes for the following achievements –
• Winner (team & individual)
• Runner up (team & individual)
• Most Touchdowns (individual only)
• Most Casualties (individual only)
• Stunty Cup (individual only)
• Best Mercenary*
• Wooden Spoon (team & individual)
* Coaches who make a mercenary or two can also complete a Mercenary outline. It allows them to not only give the stats and skills of their mercenary but to also fill out their background fluff. Theses must be submitted in advance and their will be an award for the best mercenary created. |
